Logistics Internships: how Adrián, Michelle and Ibai are learning from within a freight forwarding company

Logistics and marketing internships: when theory meets reality

Studying a profession allows you to acquire knowledge, understand concepts and build a foundation on which to start developing a career. But there are things that are only truly understood when the time comes to face them in a professional environment.

Logistics internships precisely enable that step: applying what you have learned, discovering how a company works from the inside and seeing that, in many cases, reality has more nuances than those presented in books or classrooms.

This is the experience that Adrián and Michelle, students linked to International Trade studies, and Ibai, who is doing his internship from the marketing area, are living. Three different profiles, three ways of learning and one common point: facing real situations, asking questions, contributing ideas and progressively gaining greater autonomy.

The first contact with the professional world

Starting an internship means entering an unknown environment. Academic knowledge is complemented by a new work dynamic, new colleagues and the need to adapt to situations that do not always have a response as straightforward as in a classroom exercise.

For Adrián, that first contact was accompanied by the usual nerves in a new environment. His assessment after the first month was positive: «
My first month was quite good. I felt nervous, but I think it's normal when you face a new environment».
In his case, one of the first surprises came from discovering the real complexity of logistics. Although he had already studied how it works, starting to work directly with it allowed him to understand that knowing the theory and facing daily operations are different experiences.

Michelle also started her internship without having a fully defined picture of what it would be like to work in a freight forwarding company. Some of her concerns were related to not learning enough or being expected to have a level of experience she did not yet have.

The reality she encountered was different. As she explains, she had the opportunity to operate in an environment where the people around her understood that she was learning and were willing to teach her patiently.

From theory to practice: learning logistics from within

Academic training is a fundamental base for starting a professional internship. However, daily work allows connecting that knowledge with real situations and better understanding how they are applied.

Adrián acknowledges that there is a direct relationship between what he studied and what he is doing during his internship: «Yes, what I have studied this first year is what I do every day and I am learning a little more».

The difference is that now those knowledge cease to be merely studied concepts and become part of a practical experience. The very complexity of the logistics sector becomes more evident when you start working directly with it.

Michelle agrees on the importance of that academic base. The teachings of International Trade have allowed her to form an idea of how to proceed in certain situations and better understand the logistics that take place within the company.

But she has also discovered that theory and practice are not always exactly the same. In fact, that difference has become an important part of her learning.

Her experience nicely summarizes one of the main contributions of international trade internships: seeing how the knowledge acquired during training transforms when it comes into contact with professional reality.

Learning alongside experienced professionals

One of the advantages of doing an internship in a freight forwarding company is being able to share the day-to-day with people who already know the sector and have accumulated professional experience.

For Adrián, this interaction has a special value. He highlights «the ease with which they resolve my doubts, always explaining the why of each thing, which turns every question into learning».

It is not only about getting an answer. Understanding the reason behind a decision allows building knowledge and, progressively, facing new situations with greater confidence.

This support has also been important for Michelle. Her previous experience made her fear that she might encounter an environment where she would be expected to have experience she did not yet have. Instead, she found people willing to explain and understand that internships are precisely a learning stage.

Thus, asking ceases to be a sign of ignorance and becomes another training tool.

What they expected versus what they found

Expectations before starting an internship do not always match the subsequent experience. In Adrián's case, the difference was especially significant.

He acknowledges that he expected «to be bored in the office and have forgotten most of what was seen in class». However, he found an environment he describes as dynamic and colleagues he could consult his doubts with.

The experience ended up being much closer to his training than he initially imagined.

Michelle, for her part, started with a different concern: not knowing if she would really have the opportunity to learn or if she would be expected to already have professional experience.

The experience was different. She found a patient environment, where the people around her understood that she was learning and that the internship could be different from theory.

That contrast ended up reinforcing her interest in the sector. After the experience, Michelle states: «Yes, I consider that after much study I have been lucky to find a sector in which I would like to grow professionally».

A different perspective: learning marketing in a freight forwarding company

Logistics internships do not have to be limited exclusively to functions related to transport operations. They can also become an opportunity to develop knowledge in areas such as marketing, communication and social media.

Ibai's experience provides precisely that perspective.

His marketing training has allowed him to apply knowledge related to social media management, creating a marketing plan as a guide and commercial research. But the professional context has presented him with a different challenge than he initially expected.

As he himself explains, the usual thing in an internship can be learning by observing a colleague, getting to know their strategies and applying them progressively. In his case, he encountered a situation that required him to develop more initiative.

The company had a social media presence still in development and within a specialized B2B niche. For Ibai, working in a logistics sector means facing a more specific audience and the need to find ways to grow the community and attract potential customers.

When internships also teach taking initiative

The absence of a specific marketing colleague to share each step directly might seem, at first glance, a difficulty. However, Ibai has turned that circumstance into an important part of his learning.

The ideas and strategies that arise are discussed with superiors and colleagues with the aim of identifying the company's needs and finding the best way to move forward.

His previous experience also helped him accept the challenge presented during the interview.

From there, learning occurs through a combination of research, communication, idea formulation and analysis of what works and what doesn't. As Ibai notes, all of this is helping him gain experience to «tackle challenges and not expect everything to come handed to you».

It is a different way of understanding marketing internships: not only as a period to observe how another person works, but also as an opportunity to learn to propose solutions, ask questions, contrast ideas and progressively assume responsibilities.

Moreover, working in a B2B environment allows him to get closer to the professional relationship between companies, partners and clients and better understand how communication develops in a specialized context.

Three experiences, one shared learning

Although their work areas are different, the experiences of Adrián, Michelle and Ibai share some elements.

For Adrián and Michelle, the internships have meant moving from content to the reality of a freight forwarding company and better understanding the complexity of the logistics sector.

For Ibai, the challenge lies in applying his marketing knowledge to a specialized B2B environment, where he needs to develop ideas, communicate them, research and learn to take initiative.

In all three cases, learning is not limited to technical knowledge. Other skills also appear that are hard to develop solely in the classroom: knowing how to ask questions, adapting to a new environment, communicating with professionals, facing doubts and learning from mistakes and successes.

Can internships change the view of a profession?

One of the great advantages of doing professional internships is discovering how a profession really is before deciding where to continue the career.

Michelle's experience is a good example. After her stint at the company, she states that the internships reinforced her enthusiasm for the sector and that she now sees herself growing professionally in it.

For other students, the result may be different. Precisely for that reason, getting to know a profession from the inside is so valuable: it allows contrasting expectations with reality and discovering which areas truly spark interest.

In Ibai's case, the internships are allowing him to add experience in B2B marketing within a specialized sector, as well as develop autonomy and the ability to face professional challenges.

Advice for students seeking professional internships

For Michelle, one of the main messages for any student thinking about doing an internship is simple:
«It is a great opportunity and you should not be afraid to make mistakes, that’s why you come to learn and apply what you have studied».
Ibai's experience points in a similar direction. He considers that, although the logistics sector can present difficulties from a marketing point of view because it is a specialized niche, that very context allows acquiring knowledge and confidence.

Moreover, working in a B2B environment provides the opportunity to closely know the relationship with partners, companies and professional clients and better understand how these profiles communicate and operate.

In short, an internship does not have to consist of knowing everything from day one. Training also means asking, trying, analyzing, making mistakes and trying again.

Internships as a starting point

The stories of Adrián, Michelle and Ibai show three different ways of experiencing professional internships.

In all cases, internships function as a bridge between training and the professional world. A space to learn alongside experienced people, resolve doubts, contribute ideas and discover what it really means to work in a sector.

For a company, training students also means offering them that space: an environment where they can ask questions, learn, take on challenges and progressively develop their abilities.

Because learning a profession is not only about studying how it works. It also consists of starting to live it from within.
